PGA Golf at Whistling Straits – Fail

Dustin Johnson must hate that place. Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI is full of sand. Some 1,200 traps. And he ended up in one that he didn’t even know he was in.

First of all, this would have all been avoided if he wouldn’t have shanked his drive. So, Dustin Johnson is not blameless here. But, this awful drive on the 18th hole ended up in a small patch of sand that the PGA deemed a trap. If you saw it, Johnson had a narrow path to hit the ball through, with people standing in the “trap”.

In the end, those watching the PGA Championship thought they were watching a three-way playoff between Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Johnson. But, a two-shot penalty against Johnson for “grounding his club” in the patch of sand he landed in on the 18th cost him a two-stroke penalty. Johnson was done for the day and Watson and Kaymer continued.

Grounding a club. Seems like a victimless crime. But, apparently in golf, it’s bad.
