People around baseball do not appear to be using a lot of words to express there surprise that Carlos Zambrano has stated his interest in retiring after last night’s Chicago Cubs game against the Atlanta Braves.
His exit stems from an awful performance that saw him give up four home runs before being ejected for throwing at Chipper Jones. After the second attempt to hit Chipper failed, the Braves were out of the dugout ready to fight. Braves reliever Peter Moylan (@PeterMoylan) had this reaction on Twitter after learning of Zambrano’s departure.
Adios Carlos Zambrano.. Talent wasted
Immediate reaction elsewhere in baseball was similar. Take this from Seattle’s injured reliever David Aardsman (@TheDA53):
Did #zambrano really pack up and leave? What a teammate.
And, finally this from baseball writer Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale), most likely speaking for Cubs ownership and management if the retirement statement holds true. Keep in mind that if Carlos Zambrano walks away, the Cubs will save millions of dollars in salary due the Big Z.
